The #hashtag is probably one of the most misunderstood and overly-abused social media practices (almost to the point) that it had us wondering over here at KC Creative if the hashtag was still relevant to social media marketers.  So, we wanted to take a second to dive in and explore the proper uses for the hashtag on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Twitter was where the hashtag originated.  With conversations moving so fast on Twitter, the hashtag became the solution.  It was the key that opened the door into a conversation.  A fast and efficient way to navigate the world of Twitter.  The hashtag is still reigns KING on Twitter.

However today on Facebook, the hashtag is not nearly as important as it used to be.  On this channel, the hashtag has been misused and overly-abused by friends, fans and marketers alike.  The hashtag is not dead on this channel, but with Facebook’s search feature being more advanced it is not necessary.  If using the hashtag on this channel, use it with intent and purpose so that it doesn’t affect your engagement.  Based on a study by Buzzsumo, Facebook posts without hashtags receive better engagement.

That leaves us with Instagram.  To hashtag or not to hashtag, that is the question!  And the ANSWER IS……..  HASHTAG!!  It will make your content easier to discover.

So, does that hashtag still have a place in the world of social media?!  We think YES, but with proper and selective use.
